Brothers of the night | 25 Feb 9.15pm, Event Cinemas George St. TIX: bit.ly/2j24uIl
Immerse yourself in this unique documentary about the compelling, provocative lives of a group of young Bulgarian sex workers. A Berlin Film Festival favourite, Brothers of the Night takes us along on their drunken, money-making nights, and hungover days.
Their conversations take all sorts of twists and turns – revealing how they landed in Vienna and started working as ‘gay for pay’ sex workers – leaving Bulgaria and starting a new family together.
Patric Chiha has done a superb job of illustrating the comings and goings of their lives, from the smoky bar, Rüdinger, to the dark streets and cramped homes of the men as they wile away their days waiting for the night to descend.
But it’s in the conversations between Stefan, Yonko, Vassili and all their friends, that the real intrigue is to be found. What brought them to their lives as ‘gay for pay’ sex-workers in a foreign country and what hidden depths do their lives and friendships contain? In fact, these chats will have you hooked to every twist and turn and leave you feeling as if you’re part of the gang.
It’s a remarkable, somewhat bleak but fascinating peek into the lives of some of the men you might not be expecting to find in a gay bar.
“A stark image of life and of people who have stumbled into something they’d never imagined themselves doing.” – The Upcoming
“Gus Van Sant meets James Bidgood meets Pasolini: Brüder der Nacht is a hybrid, imbued with a rich baroque semi-darkness, deliberately and disturbingly oscillating between documentary and dramatised scenes.” – CineMan
