Forbidden Book Club – with Anne O Nomis

November 19, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - September 9, 2018 @ 4:30 pm UTC+11

The Forbidden Book Club – hosted by Anne O Nomis and featuring International guests.

Ever wanted to be a part of an intimate, interesting and entirely subversive bookclub?

The Passionfruit Forbidden Book Club features 12 books which were once banned due to their erotic or so called ‘obscene’ content. Its publishers and authors were in some cases jailed and prosecuted, and books taken off the shelves and seized by law enforcement.

The Catholic Church had an ‘Index Librorum Prohibitorum’ – Index of Banned Books – which included publications deemed heretical, anti-clerical or lascivious. (They banned everyone from Gallileo in 1616 – who had dared suggest the earth revolved around the sun, right through to feminist Simone de Beauvoir’s book ‘The Second Sex’ banned in 1956. So it’s unsurprising that much or our literature with erotic themes was also banned by the church.)

Sex historian Anne O Nomis has curated the club and will host it on one Sunday afternoon each month.

Interesting, high profile co-hosts are appearing at each meet. (We don’t want to give the game away but we’ve got a celebrity singer, a New York sexologist, an English obscenity lawyer, a legendary Sydney Dominatrix, and more.)

We will be starting with the English classic of ‘Fanny Hill’ by John Cleland, dipping into the Marquis de Sade’s ‘Justine’, discovering Balzac’s tales of ‘Sarrasine’ and ‘A Passion in the Desert’, and be reading ‘Madame Bovary’ by Flaubert over Christmas.

Into the New Year of 2018, we’ll be reading Beaudelaire’s six banned poems of ‘Flowers of Evil’ and spend our February (and Valentine’s Day) reading ‘Lady Chatterly’s Lover’ by D.H Lawrence.

From March it’s ‘Brave New World’ by Aldoes Huxley, and then onto Paris in April for Anais Nin’s diary on ‘Henry and June’ in its unexpurgated form. Which is only then natural to follow with her lover Henry Miller’s banned book, ‘Tropic of Cancer’.

In June, we’re reading Nabakov’s famous banned book of lust with the underage ‘Lolita’. Followed by beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg’s subversive poem ‘Howl’ with its references to homosexual sex, and we end, rather appropriately with ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’ by Hubert Selby.

Ticket includes Book Club Salon Event at Passionfruit, featuring a talk on the history of the banned book, conversation and ‘Sinful Snacks’ with a ‘Decadent Drink’.

Books are available separately. You’ll want to start reading in advance. There are a couple of books where Anne recommends an ‘unexpurgated’ version (an edition which hasn’t cut out all the good sexy stuff!) Or a particular French-to-English translation, as noted.
