HRAFF Brisbane 2017
June 1 @ 6:30 pm - June 3 @ 9:00 pm UTC+10
This June, join us in celebrating 10 years of the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival at the Palace Barracks cinemas, where we’ll be screening three of our most highly acclaimed films.
Brought to you with the help of our principal partner Bank Australia, 2017 promises to be our biggest festival ever. There has never been a better chance to delve into what HRAFF has to offer!
THURSDAY 1 JUNE (OPENING NIGHT): THE OPPOSITION
A controversial documentary detailing the struggles of 3,000 residents of a coastal community in Papua New Guinea, who watched helplessly as police bulldozed their homes to make way for a luxury resort. Australian director Hollie Fifer’s pursuit of the truth, wherever it led, prompted one subject to file an injunction against the film’s release. Right triumphing over might never seemed so daunting.
FRIDAY 2 JUNE: THE FREEDOM TO MARRY
A heart-warming documentary chronicling the historic movement to the US Supreme Court and landmark ruling for marriage equality. We’re compelled to continue watching as many dedicated and inexhaustible advocates turn opponents of same sex marriage into supporters.
SATURDAY 3 JUNE (CLOSING NIGHT): QUEST
A portrait of a family in North Philadelphia. Christopher “Quest” Rainey, along with his wife Christine’a (aka “Ma Quest”), open the door to their home music studio, which serves as a creative sanctuary from the strife that grips their neighborhood. Over the years, the family evolves as everyday life brings a mix of joy and unexpected crisis. Set against the backdrop of a country now in turmoil, the film is a tender depiction of an American family whose journey is a profound testament to love, healing and hope.
