Letting Off STEAM

October 25, 2017 @ 10:30 am - December 6, 2017 @ 12:30 pm UTC+11

Letting off S.T.E.A.M is an inclusive art and science program at Casula Powerhouse for children for 6-9 yrs. Over five two hour sessions within CPAC’s rich visual environment, this course will provide younger children with innovative ways to examine connections between art making, the sciences and art history. So come and let your children let off some S.T.E.A.M throughout 2017.

Brief overview by week:

Week 1 | SCIENCE & ART: IMAGINARY MIND CRAFT
Students will develop a list of their favorite things and translate their findings into a visual mapping of the brain. Students will be encouraged to tap into all aspects of their personality to generate a complex and layered relief form.

Artist Jack Stahel: Jack Stahel’s practice incorporates processes of drawing and collecting and can be briefly described as both informative, foreign yet familiar and fun. Imaginary Science is his fabricated field of research, and involves various creative examinations of how the human brain thinks about itself.

Week 2 | TECHNOLOGY: TECHNO-COSMO-BODY
Students will explore the impact of technology on the human form. The workshop will offer a gateway into investigating how technology has impacted and transformed our lives and more specifically how it has altered how the body functions and how the human form moves through the world. Using a combination of found and electrical materials, students will develop a techno-cosmo replica of their own boy.

Artist Jayden Hastings: Jaden Hastings’ work focuses upon the interplay of art and science – challenging the understanding of both disciplines, and moving them into new spaces for exploration.

Week 3 | ENGINEERING: REFLECTION IN – REFLECTION OUT
Students explore the significance of materiality in revealing and concealing the environment. Using only highly reflective materials, students will construct a structure and examine how it responds to and converses with the space around it.

Artist Tadao Ando: Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect whose minimal aesthetic and love of natural materials like glass and concrete earned him the Pritzker Prize in 1995. His buildings are marked by a masterful command of the elements, including natural light that diffuses into interiors at just the right angles, pools of water that reflect his angular designs, and ventilation methods that mimic human breathing.

Week 4 | ART: MAKING THE INVISIBLE/VISIBLE

Students will be introduced to The Hollows, a large transparent sculpture by Mikala Dwyer and will be invited to create three dimensional forms inspired by their observations. A variety of transparent materials will be explored and arranged to give structure and weight to a sculpture that appears light and vulnerable, much like Dwyer’s works. The forms developed will include both positive and negative space, furthering the students understanding of compositional balance.

Artist Mikala Dwyer: Mikala Dwyer’s practice is predominantly installation-based, in which she constructs distinctive personal spaces within a gallery, using materials that have a strong association with the body.

Week 5 | MATHS: GRIDLOCKED

Students will develop a mathematical drawing guided by the lines and confines of grid paper and guided by the principles of instruction drawing.

Artist Sol LeWitt: Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was important in the creation of the new aesthetic of the 1960’s that was the opposite of ‘Abstract Expressionism’. LeWitt, maintained the importance of the idea and majority of his work is executed by others using specific instructions provided by the artist

Letting off S.T.E.A.M will be led by Lleah Smith.
