It’s not often an Italian lesbian rom-com comes along. It’s possibly not ever, especially one centred around a middle-aged couple with a picture-perfect life. Successful architect Federica (Margherita Buy) and famous-actor-turned-restaurateur Marina (Sabrina Ferilli) have been together for five years with barely a glitch.
Except perhaps that Federica is still a little uptight about being too out. In fact she insists she isn’t even a lesbian. It’s not really a problem, until she bumps into an old flame. A male one. And she’s interested. Meanwhile Marina is offered a film role and is tempted back in front of the camera, against Frederica’s wishes. The ensuing drama doesn’t stop the humour in this charming and exceedingly watchable tale.
Me, Myself and Her has been praised for the normalcy of the lesbian relationship it depicts, against the backdrop of Italy’s still-conservative society. The film has received acclaim at queer and Italian film festivals internationally. It is award-winning director Maria Sole Tognazzi’s seventh film.
“Films that normalize this kind of relationship are just as important as films that tell tragedies about it.” – The Knockturnal
“Italian women in their 50s in love. With each other. In Italian. Come on, you know you’re tempted.” – After Ellen
