Omar Sosa | Brisbane Powerhouse
February 17, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm UTC+10
Expressive, passionate and fuelled by Latin rhythms and folkloric traditions, Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano breathe new life into jazz fusion.
An adventurous and virtuosic composer-pianist-band leader (whose energetic performances are legendary), Omar Sosa blends traditional Afro-Cuban influences with modern jazz harmonies for a brilliantly joyous and thoroughly contemporary global sound.
For many, Omar Sosa has helped change the way we listen to music. In 2003, Omar received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States.
Omar’s presentation in Brisbane will include a mix of ballads and sophisticated mid and up-tempo arrangements. Featured will be a number of his signature compositions, including My Three Notes and Muevete en D, as well as material from his recent album, ILE. Throughout the show, Omar features his unique mix of Fender Rhodes electric piano and acoustic grand piano. Quarteto AfroCubano includes two musicians from Omar’s hometown (Camagüey, Cuba), Ernesto Simpson on drums, and Leandro Saint-Hill on saxophones and flute, plus Mozambican bassist Childo Tomas.
Join us to hear this legendary composer and pianist, as he takes the stage with Quarteto AfroCubano to play his signature latin rhythm.
