Other Worlds July Book Club
July 4 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm UTC+10
Better Read’s Other Worlds Book Club is named after Margaret Atwood’s essay collection, which maps the richly fertile crosscurrents of speculative and science fiction, slipstream, utopias and dystopias, and fantasy, and muses on their roots in the age-old human impulse to imagine new worlds.
What unifies these genres is the space that they provide to explore, challenge, and subvert the status quo, to investigate the complexities of binaries, such as good/evil, feminine/masculine, mind/body, and attempt to define what it is that makes us human.
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
With the Australian release of the TV series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s feminist speculative fiction novel set to hit SBS on Demand this July, we’ve decided to go back to where it all began… The book!
Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…
