Saturday Church (BQFF 2018)
March 10 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm UTC+10
Presented with Wendybird.
“Blending sensitive drama with musical fantasy and a heart worn unapologetically on its sleeve, this is a modest charmer that plays almost like a narrative response to last year’s Kiki. Young gay and gender-questioning audiences will definitely want to strike the pose.” – David Rooney
Ulysses’ life changes when he comes into contact with a vibrant transgender youth community where people facing the same challenges stand by each other with the help of a Saturday Church program. He quickly has to take on a double life: satisfying his family’s desire to have him part of their religious community while digging deeper into his true identity. But his aunt is growing more and more suspicious, and the young man will soon be forced to reveal the truth about himself.
But the shy and effeminate Ulysses has another challenge to confront: he is not comfortable in his own skin. As his family pretends he is just going through a phase, Ulysses is also being bullied at school for his introversion and sensitivity. He finds an escape by creating a world of fantasy for himself, filled with glimpses of beauty, dance and music.
Part musical, all coming of age, gender queer/non conforming, fantasy film with some commanding support roles from Kate Bornstein (Queer and Pleasant Danger), and MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore (who will feature in Ryan Murphy’s TV show Pose).
Wendybird is a LGBTIQ community group that is working to grow a safer and supportive community that is diverse, welcoming and inclusive, where all people can experience meaningful connection and belonging.
