TODAY! Snap Action: No to Queerphobia, No to the Daily Telegraph
July 13, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm UTC+10
Just when we thought the Daily Telegraph couldn’t get any worse, they stoop to a new low. In a full page spread discussing health risks facing today’s youth, they list being same sex attracted.
We condemn the Daily Telegraph for their shameful behavior, categorizing same sex attraction as an ‘illness’ and major health risk.
Not only is this factually untrue, but it is harmful rhetoric that tells all LGBTQI+ folk that there is something wrong with them.
Research from Beyond Blue and the CDC in the US state that discrimination and exclusion against LGBTQI+ folk are the leading cause of mental illness and suicide in the community, not the fact that they are queer to begin with.
For a national newspaper to contribute to this kind of discourse is dangerous, disturbing, and nothing short of hate speech.
🌈 Bring along your rainbow flags, rainbow chalk, glitter, megaphones and loud & proud queer voices! 🌈
