Sunday of Earthly Delights

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (CPAC) invites you to witness a defining moment in its history. This event celebrates the recording of the arts centre’s first ever soundtrack, in a series of seasonal recordings to capture the essence of CPAC.

Ambient Guerrilla, in collaboration with CPAC records a seasonal summer soundtrack in the company of family, friends and wildlife on Sunday 28th of January, 2018, 12pm until sunset, in an afternoon of untroubled feasting, reclining and general hullabaloo dubbed Sunday of Earthly Delights. The recording will commence at 10am, with festivities beginning at 12pm.

Situated on the banks of the idyllic Georges River in over 20 acres of enchanting parkland, the CPAC’s spacious industrial turbine hall, galleries and grassy picnic surrounds will be yours for merrymaking whilst listening to the terraqueous soundscapes and rhythms of four of Sydney’s best DJ’s: Getleforce, Nick Whales, Lyndon Pike and Steve Sonius while Kevin Davidson and his heavenly sound system keep the sprites stirring.

You are invited to bring along a picnic hamper with your favourite fare or purchase something from Bellbird Dining and Bar’s mouth-watering menu. There will be bars conveniently distributed throughout the grounds supplying all your alcoholic needs. Please be aware that you cannot bring your own alcohol to this event.

This is a free, family friendly affair bringing like-minded social groups together harmoniously in a safe and respectful environment to the benefit of all.

To officially open the event at 12pm will be the launch of Light Industry: an exhibition of photographs by Vu Quang Canh, a local Liverpool artist. The exhibition showcases a selection of Vu’s photographic journey highlighting the architectural heritage and unique identity of Casula Powerhouse, as well as showing the mastery of Vu’s photographic talent.

For a special treat, CPAC’s Director, Craig Donarski will run two personalised tours for those who want to discover the unique and diverse history of the centre. He will be joined by CPAC’s Curator, Lizzy Marshall, to provide a detailed description of the site, building and exhibitions Light Industry, Fresh Blood: Redback Graphix and Its Aftermath, Manga Hokusai Manga and Hear No Evil/See No Evil – Locust Jones. These tours will occur at 12:30pm and 2:00pm.

As part of the Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition, The Japan Foundation, Sydney has generously provided a free of charge film program, featuring two iconic manga films for children (5 – 12) and teens (13+), screened at 12:30pm and 3:00pm, for all attending Sunday of Earthly Delights.

Kicking off at 12:30pm is the hilarious Crayon Shin Chan: Bravo! Samurai Battle, a famous manga series following the adventures of ‘Shin’ who travels back in time to the Tensho era (1574) in the warring states period. This film is suitable for family audiences, ages 5+.Teen favourite BAKUMAN commences at 3:00pm, a modern zero-to-hero adventure which depicts the tale of two best friends who risk their lives to become comic book artists. Don’t miss your chance to watch some of the best manga films and attend the interactive, world famous Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition in the upper turbine galleries.

As an integral part of CPAC’s soundscape, we want to capture the sounds of children squealing in delight as part of the recording! Artist Tim Andrew is running a paste-up workshop accompanying the exhibition Fresh Blood: Redback Graphix and its Aftermath. Children aged 5 and up are invited help us cover Casula’s ceramic studio wall in art and design. This is a free all day drop-in event from 11-4pm.
