Award-winning Sydney film director Craig Boreham has made a name for himself with short films exploring sexuality. His first feature film Teenage Kicks is no different, winning over critics at the 2016 Sydney Film Festival – making a splash with its script, cinematography, score, and an incredible lead performance from Miles Szanto.
When his brother dies unexpectedly, 17-year-old Miklós Varga’s world is completely spun off its axis. He feels immense guilt over his brother’s sudden death, and is now torn between running away from it all with his best mate, Dan, and looking after his grieving family, which includes Annuska, his brother’s very pregnant girlfriend. On top of this, his burgeoning sexuality is making everything more complex, as he is becoming increasingly attracted to Dan, and his urge to experiment with men takes hold.
In a stunning break-out performance that has been widely praised, Szanto perfectly captures the turmoil of Miklós and his unfolding desires. Boreham shows that he is adept at telling queer stories that are mature and provocative without resorting to melodrama. Come and see Sydney on the big screen.
“A gutsy coming-of-age story that signals the arrival of a compelling new voice in queer Australian cinema… Szanto gives a brave baring-all performance, unpredictable but acutely balanced. [The film] confronts the topsy-turvy world of adolescence with a deeply compelling style and spirit.” – The Guardian
“The right stylistic touches and a strong central performance render the familiar both affecting and lingering here.” – Screen Daily
“A film that leaves you thinking long after the final credits have rolled.” – The AU Review
