“The real Transparent.” – Hollywood Reporter
Four US women, middle-aged and beyond, in the very early stages of transitioning, let us into their sometimes bleak, sometimes hopeful lives in nondescript northwest towns. We join them on a pilgrimage to the Esprit Conference for transgender women in Washington state. It’s a liberating experience for the subjects and viewers alike, but the euphoria the conference inspires is only fleeting.
Nina, Amy, Krystal, and Jodie, who’ve lead closeted lives until now, step and stumble closer to their true selves after the conference. Nina keeps delivering pizzas as Reinhardt, careful not to push the limits of their wife. Twins Krystal and Jodie had been harbouring the same burdensome secret, yet once revealed, the truth doesn’t exactly set them free. And Amy, who undergoes surgery in Bangkok, faces disappointment upon returning.
Amy gives a powerful speech to a group of trans women, which gives the documentary its name. It is an unforgettable moment in this quietly powerful film, which is beautifully captured with an ethereal quality thanks to directors and cinematographers Jessica Dimmock and Christopher LaMarca. Dimmock, a contributor to The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker, won the 2014 Infinity Award for Photojournalist of the Year from the International Center of Photography.
